Can the world end poverty by 2030?

Eradicating poverty in the world has proven to be a hard nut to crack. According to the World Bank, about 10% of the world’s population, which is about 734 million people, lives on less than $1.90 a day. This shows that one-tenth of every individual lives in extreme poverty, though the issue is more concentrated in sub-Saharan Africa and Southern- Asia, it is still a global concern.

Extreme poverty is defined by the United Nations (UN) as a condition characterized by severe deprivation of basic human needs, which include food, potable water, access to health care, shelter, and education.

Poverty eradication has been central to the development plan of countries. In 2015, the United Nations General Assembly developed a framework called the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). SDGs are a collection of global goals created to foster peace and prosperity for the people now and in the future. The first goal of the SDGs was to eradicate extreme poverty by 2030, while significant progress has been made, it is still superficial that this goal will be attained. The covid-19 pandemic and the rising inflation which – can be linked to the ongoing War in Ukraine – are some of the major setbacks that may delay its progress.

This calls for a more effective approach to tackle the issue of poverty which is developing a culture of giving. People living in extreme poverty need all the help they can get to live a better life and you can help in this cause by donating to charity. Massive impact can be made towards the cause of eradicating poverty when people come together and give, no matter how small. Giving also benefits the donor as well. A research conducted in Germany revealed that people who donate to others (time and resources included) are more satisfied with their life than people who do not. This is because the knowledge that one is helping others live a better life creates in them a sense of purpose and fulfilment.

Different organizations have been created as a tool to help fight poverty, some of these organizations include Oxfam International, End Poverty Now, BRAC, and Ribon. In this article, I will be talking extensively about Ribon and its role in promoting the culture of giving which will in turn aid in the eradication of poverty in the world.

What is Ribon?

Ribon is a decentralized donation platform built on the Polygon network, that enables users to donate freely to charities of their choice through donations already paid for by a promoter.  A donor could then decide to become a promoter by adding money into the Ribon Donation Pool to enable more users to donate freely which subsequently encourages others to join them in a global culture of giving.

Ribon was created in 2016 to inculcate the habit of donating into people’s lives by making the art of giving more fun and practical.

Imagine a platform where you can donate money to the needy without actually spending your money. Yeah, you read it right! Here is how it works: Ribon receives donations from foundations and organizations that share a similar ideology of promoting the culture of giving in the world. These resources are then dispensed among users who are able to donate them freely to charities of their choice without touching their own money. Through this free donation exposure, some users are hyped to make more donations from their own pockets.

What’s in it for your company when you partner with Ribon?

As a brand, when you integrate the Ribon app into your digital platform, it broadens the reach of your project and increases engagement as more users would want to get involved in the free donation feature embedded in your website or application. You also benefit as your brand stands out amongst others and gains relevance as not just being a regular brand but also one that serves humanity through its services.

Integrating the Ribon app into your platform is simple, all you need to do is to add a button or link on your page which gives your audience access to make donations to any project of their choice.

What makes us Unique?

  • Decentralized: Ribon is a Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO). This means it is owned and managed by the community and not by a  group of people.
  • We are Transparent: Research shows that most people are hesitant to donate to NGOs because the NGOs are not transparent enough for the donors to be able to know if their donations are getting to the audience it was intended for or not. Ribon takes cognizance of this by building an open-source platform backed by blockchain, which is accessible to the public.
  • Blockchain Backed: Ribon records and stores its data through smart contracts on the blockchain technology which ensures transparency and immutability.

Ribon, since its inception in 2016, has helped over 160,000 people through the donations made on its platform. Ribon’s goal is to actualize the target of eliminating poverty by 2030 and lots of work has been put in place such as:

  1. Becoming decentralized to have a wider reach;
  2. Building a convenient platform that enables users to donate seamlessly;
  3. Making the culture of giving a normal day-to-day routine in people’s lives by making the art of giving fun.

Mahatma Gandhi described poverty as “the worst form of violence”, hence the need to eradicate it to make our society a better place to live. You too can join the movement in making eradicating poverty by 2030 a reality.
